I am a graphic designer exploring traditional and contemporary foodways through ethnographic research and case studies of immigrants in New Zealand.
Ideas to explore
- cross cultural connection through food
- food as a significant identity marker (especially for immigrants)
- The transformation of Foodways due to fusion of culture
- Foodways as an intangible cultural heritage
- The tourists lens of local foodways (authentic vs Stereotype)
- The effect of the standardisation of food production and corporate food giants have on traditional foodways.
- Food as an intrinsic experience - connection eating at the dinner table.

Food and taste does much more than fullfill ones appetite. It influences individual culinary culture and advancements in cooking techniques. p15
Today food is being influenced by technology and chemistry more than ever. Machinery is taking over the production of food, and this is going so far as artificial intelligence taking over the creation of food previously done by humans. Foods such as Base Pasta is packed with all the nutrients humans technically need in a day, but its purely functional qualities take away the ritual of flavour. Beyond Meat "a food tech venture shifts the mode of food production" is an immitation meat made from plant-based ingredients and is a good example of how technology can help to redefine the framework of food production in response to the environmental needs for us to adapt.
